St. Mark’s Basilica

St Mark’s Basilica, the Cathedral of Venice, is the most famous of the city’s churches and one of the best known examples of Byzantine architecture. It lies on St Mark’s Square, what a special setting for your catholic wedding in Venice! Weddings are celebrated in the intimate atmosphere of the wonderful crypt with intersecting vaults and niches supported by marble Greek columns and Byzantine capitals.

According to the legend this beautiful and intimate church was one of the seven original churches on the islands of Venice, founded at the beginning of the eighth century by Saint Magnus (Bishop of Oderzo) and dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It was rebuilt in 1475 in the Gothic style, and subsequently it received Renaissance-style embellishments in the 1490’s and Baroque additions in the eighteenth century. A good escape from the usual Venice crowd, this church is located in a typical Venetian corner and will enchant you with its bright and coloured atmosphere, perfect for your memorable catholic ceremony in Venice!

Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli

Your catholic wedding in Venice can be celebrated in the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli. This church can be found in a tiny square called the Miracoli. Its exterior and interior is decorated with many coloured marble. According to tradition, the marvellous multi-coloured marble, used both internally and externally, came from what was left over of the building of St Mark’s Basilica.

The elegant two form facade is introduced by a  semi circular front and enriched by rose windows. The interior has one nave and is outstanding in its refined elegance. It’s the perfect church for an intimate catholic ceremony in Venice.

Church of Redentore

Another very nice church for your catholic ceremony in Venice is the Church of Redentore, situated on the Giudecca island. It is considered one of Andrea Palladio’s works or art in religious architecture. It was commissioned by the Venetian Republic’s senate in 1577 as a memorial church consecrated to Christ the Redeemer in thanks for the end of the plague in 1576. The work represents one of the principle Renaissance works of art. 

The exterior of the Church, from a distance, seems like a fantastic freize.  It has the typical Palladian columns and strong vertical, horizontal geometry.  The inside is painted white and has the  majestically of a simple classic temple. 

The columns follow the line of the walls along the only nave to the altar, above which is the suspended dome.  The side altars display paintings from the Venetian School from the 16th to the 17th centuries.

 

Church of St. Moisè
